Running during the winter months in Baltimore can be challenging. It can also be a fun and rewarding experience if you are training with the right group of friends. Join members of the Baltimore Road Runners Club to learn how to improve your endurance, increase your speed and gain confidence as you prepare for trail running races in 2018.

Overview: The Trail Run Training Group is designed for individuals that have some running experience and are looking to participate in trail running races ranging from 5 miles, 10 miles and possibly beyond. The program will safely guide runners through a series of weekly trail runs and track workouts with the goal of becoming more confident in running trails and improving their performance in races at the conclusion of the program. Under the leadership of experienced coaches, runners will be introduced to topics such as proper trail running techniques, pacing, developing a race strategy, speedwork, hydration, stretching, etc.

Workouts:  Weekly trail runs will gradually build from 1 hour to 2 hours each Saturday morning. The speed work schedule will start with short distances and gradually increase in length over the 16-18 week training period. A more structured schedule can be prepared for participants participating in the trail races for those individuals that request it.

Prerequisites: Participants interested in the BRRC Trail Race Series should have some experience running trail races that are 5K and 10K in length.

Location: The group will meet twice a week on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings.

  • Thursday evening - Speedwork on the track at Carver Center for Arts and Technology Address: 938 York Road, Towson, MD 21204
    • Location: The group will meet at the track.
    • Time: Warm-up goes from 6:30 to 7:00. All workouts start promptly at 7:00pm
  • Saturday morning - Distance runs on the trails of Loch Raven Reservoir and Cromwell Valley Park Address: Intersection of Morgan Mill Road and Loch Raven Drive
    • Location: Meet at the Big Rock at this intersection
    • Time: All workouts start at 6:30am

  
Dates:  Program starts Saturday, March 3, 2017 and will continue to June, 2018.

  • Gunpowder Keg Trail Ultra – April 14, 2018 
  • Pretty Boy Trail Race – April 22, 2018 
  • Gunpowder Trail Race – May 27, 2018 
  • Baltimore’s Twilight 6 Mile Trail Race – July 3, 2018 
  • Sweet Air Trail Race – July 8, 2018

Cost: There is no cost to this program, but BRRC membership is required.
